Whilst saving the Environment is the key to solar energy, you can also benefit from doing the right thing and earning money at the same time. The Feed in Tariff (the "gold rush" as described by many national newspapers) has been put in place to help the government achieve their carbon reduction targets by incentivising the householders of the U.K. The Feed in Tariff generates an income which is paid directly to the homeowner, the tariff is compulsory and is paid by energy suppliers to all consumers who generate their own electricity through renewable sources which have been completed by MCS accredited installers. The payments are dependent on the size of your installation and the amount of energy you use. If you are eligible to receive the FIT then you will benefit in 3 ways:
1. Generation tariff – a set rate paid by the energy supplier for each unit (or kWh) of electricity you generate. This rate will change each year for new entrants to the scheme but once you join you will continue on the same tariff for 25 years in the case of solar electricity (PV).
2. Export tariff - you will receive a further 3p/kWh from your energy supplier for each unit you export back to the electricity grid, that is when it isn’t used on site. The export rate is the same for all technologies.
3. Energy bill savings – you will be making savings on your electricity bills because generating electricity to power your appliances means you don’t have to buy as much electricity from your energy supplier. The amount you save will vary depending on how much of the electricity you use on site.
As an example, a typical domestic solar electricity system, with an installation size of 2.7 kWp could earn around:
This assumes 50% of the electricity generated is exported. The figure will vary depending on how much is exported. A system of this size with Gardinia Solar will cost around £13,000, which would mean your system had paid for itself in 11 years leaving 14 years of clear profit.
The payments by the FIT will be paid at 43.3 kwh for all installations completed before December 2011. These payments
* Are Guaranteed for 25yrs from the government
* Are Fully Index Linked annually
* Are Tax Free
* Offer Returns of up to 10% per year
The example above assumes an initial spend of £13,000, an income of £1,170 per year and a total return over 25 years of £29,250 which is over double the outlay. This assumption does not take into account the increase in energy bills or the index linked element. It also assumes a full south facing roof and maximum efficiency. These figures have been produced by using the Energy Savings trust website.
For smaller roofs we have packages available starting from £7,000.

As an example, a typical domestic solar electricity system, with an installation size of 2.7 kWp could earn around:
- £990 per year from the Generation Tariff
- £40 per year from the Export Tariff
- £140 per year reduction in current electricity bills.
